Plug and Play driver or package I have a computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit, it isn't networked, not sharing any printers, but has 2 Ghost Printers that keeps showing up.
The Print Management Utility won't work as it isn't Pro. One of the Ghost Printers has the same name as the Default Printer, so removing the folder in the would get rid of the printer I need.
I know I could potentially wipe it out and then re-install, but wondering if that will just bring the problem back with it. I continue to have problems with phantom printers. Many times when our wireless network goes down it zaps my wireless printers.
They become "offline" I have to delete them and then add them back. The "add printer" software requires that I give the "new" printer a different name from the old, for example Brother MFC now has to be called Brother MFC v1 or something like that. The new printer works fine but when I go to print the old printer still shows as a print option in many programs. Over time this has gotten cluttered. It may be that I had pending jobs when I deleted the printer.
Some of the "old" printer names show in Printer Ports, but when I try to delete them the software says they are in use. Does any one know how to get the old names out of my drop down print box? I have a hard time remembering which name is the current printer and would love to get rid of the old phantom names. RB Tech Guy -- thank you for your input.
I have tried to delete the old printers from "Ports" in the Printer Server box but when I do it says they are in use. I agree with you that this could be the problem but that is water over the dam now. I deleted the printers with a job pending. Now I'm paying for it! When I try to cancel jobs, or delete the offending phantom printer I get an error message saying "operation on a printer cannot be completed" or "printer cannot be removed.
BSOD'D -- thanks for the tutorial.
